Jennie's 70th birthday

Our holiday in Cornwall to celibrate Jennie's 70th birthday and our 48th wedding anniversary began for us on Friday 27th July 2018. We drove halfway down so we could get to Cadgwith in good time on Saturday. Greta, Spence and the kids did the same thing and we arrived at almost the same time. We were amazed at the house, sitting on the cliff top overlooking Cadgwith, and having a huge living space plus the six bedrooms. Martin, Eve and Bertie arrived and we celebrated Eve's birthday. Spence had organised a grocery delivery to set us up for the holiday and that arrived early evening. Spence's brother Scott, with Caroline and baby Heather arrived and we had a good barbecue.

Sunday the weather wasn't terribly good so we went to Gweek and the Seal Sanctuary. We all enjoyed it very much and would recommend it.

Monday we went to Lands End and had a very good time there. We had the mandatory photograph taken, had a nice picnic lunch and spent time exploring.

In the evening Scott very kindly looked after the children while the six of us, Greta and Spence, Martin and Eve, Jennie and myself went for a very good evening meal at the Housel Bay Hotel as the official birthday dinner.

Tuesday the weather started to improve so it was a beach day. We went to Kennack Sands and Rebekah and Ben had a surfing lesson. It was probably a bit long at two hours but the kids got on extremely well and we all enjoyed the day very much.

Wednesday was Jennie's birthday and her wish was to go to Kynance Cove. We were astonished at how many people were there - we had to park in an overflow car park - but we all enjoyed the experience. In the evening we had a birthday meal for Jennie. Scott and family left us.

Thursday a couple of us were a bit poorly so we had a slow start. We eventually went to Roskilly, the ice cream farm, where we enjoyed the farm animals as well as the ice cream. Later in the day Greta and Spence left us for a wedding at the weekend in Austria. Their kids didn't want to go so they stayed with us. For the convenience of us all Greta left us her bus and took my car. The Adkins arrived.

Friday morning Paul and I went to Goonhilly where we had arranged for a private tour of the facility. We both enjoyed it very much indeed. In the afternoon we had another session on the beach at Kennack Sands.

Saturday we had to leave the house while it was cleaned so we all went to St Ives for the day. We used the park and ride and enjoyed the train journey into the town. Paul, Kay and Rebekah went round the Tate while we did a town trail with Ben. A good day.

Sunday we went to Kynance again. The tide wasn't very helpful as it was high when we got there. Eve and Rebekah swam round to the secret beach while Ben and I climbed the hill to watch them. After a picnic lunch on the beach I decided to do a bit of climbing, had a very nasty fall and ended up in Helston hospital. Some wonderful people helped on the beach but there were two stars, Lesley the paramedic who took charge and patched me up and Martin who stayed calm and generally looked after me. After getting eight stiches in my head I was pretty-much grounded for a couple of days.

On Monday Sandra and John came and we spent an easy day in and around the house and the village. In the evening Paul and Kay, Martin and Eve went to the Minack theatre to see the musical Sweeny Todd.

Tueday was another local pottering day while Paul, Kay and Rosey went back to St Ives.

Wednesday we all went to St Michael's Mount. It was a bit of a rush to get there before the tide came in and we all had to paddle across the causeway. I think this was an interesing experience for Sandra and John! We enjoyed looking round and the kids were very good. We had a nice lunch, then got a boat back as the tide was right in. A fun day for us all.

Thursday Sandra and John went home and we spent more time on the beach at Kennack Sands. It was a nice relaxing time with the kids playing in the sea and with the sand.

Friday the Adkins went home. We did a local walk with the kids and had an afternoon cream tea in Cadgwith. We got most of our stuff packed in the evening ready for leaving tomorrow.

Saturday there was a bit of a rush to get out by ten. All the luggage was dumped in the hall while Martin and I packed the cars. We got out just in time and set off, planning to meet later at Jamaica Inn. The traffic was awful so we were later than we hoped so had lunch there before going round the exhibition of smuggling. We said our last goodbyes and set off home.

The next day while unpacking and doing the washing we discovered that our big case had somehow got into Martin's car and was now in Sheffield! We'll collect it the next time we are there.
